90% of Noida Condos Have Broken Rainwater Harvesting Systems, ET RealEstate
NOIDA: The groundwater department conducted inspections of rainwater harvesting systems within residential societies across Noida and Greater Noida last week. The survey revealed that 140 of the 164 societies had non-functioning rainwater harvesting systems, while 10 societies lacked any such facilities. A mere 14 societies were found to have operational rainwater harvesting systems.
Officials noted that the 140 societies with non-operational systems had rainwater harvesting pits that were filled with stagnant water and accumulated debris, which was contributing to groundwater contamination.
According to hydrologist Ankita Rai, from the groundwater department, rainwater harvesting systems are compulsory installations in all residential complexes and government structures. “Whilst authorities verify these systems prior to granting OC and CC certificates, subsequent maintenance often lapses after certification,” she said.
This recent discovery prompted residents to question the legitimacy of OC certificates issued to these societies without proper systems in place.
Discussions were held between the Noida ACEO and the groundwater department last week where society investigation reports were presented. It was decided during the meeting that the Authority will issue notices to all societies, providing them a 15-day window for compliance.
After this period, a joint inspection team comprising Authority officials and groundwater department representatives will assess the societies. Non-compliance within the stipulated 15-day period will result in punitive measures. Additionally, societies found to have not installed the system during the investigation will also face enforcement action.
“In approximately ten residential societies across Noida, functional rainwater harvesting systems are being managed by the respective Apartment Owners Association (AOA). These associations ensure timely maintenance of the systems. The AOAs demonstrate a clear understanding of rainwater harvesting’s significance, which contributes to the systems’ continued operation. It is essential for builders as well to acknowledge and fulfil their obligations in this regard as well,” Rai said.
