India’s cybersecurity job market soars amid rising demand but faces critical talent shortage

India’s cybersecurity job market is booming, with increasing demand for skilled professionals as businesses and government agencies enhance their digital operations. According to a study by Indeed, there has been a 14% rise in cybersecurity job postings from September 2023 to September 2024, indicating a growing demand for experts to safeguard against increasingly sophisticated cyber threats.

However, this surge in demand is being met with a persistent talent shortage, particularly in specialised roles, leaving critical gaps in the country’s cybersecurity infrastructure.

Cybersecurity demand skyrockets in major tech hubs

Bengaluru, India’s tech capital, leads the country in cybersecurity job openings, accounting for nearly 10% of listings, followed by Delhi NCR (4%), remote roles (2.2%), Hyderabad (2%), and Mumbai (2%).

As a hub for IT giants, startups, and multinational firms, Bengaluru’s demand for cybersecurity professionals has risen sharply, driven by the need to protect the expanding digital landscape.

Similarly, Delhi NCR’s demand comes from its corporate and government sectors, as well as its growing digital infrastructure, which requires robust data protection measures.

Remote cybersecurity jobs are also on the rise, offering professionals flexibility while maintaining a focus on protecting sensitive information. This shift in workplace preferences is broadening opportunities for individuals across the country to enter the cybersecurity field.

Government initiatives to combat cybercrime

Earlier this year, the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), under the Ministry of Home Affairs, took significant steps to address the cybersecurity talent shortage by announcing a slew of job openings.

These roles, critical to national security and economic stability, were designed to combat the growing threat of cybercrime. Salaries for these positions ranged from ₹65,000 to ₹2.5 lakh per month, with job opportunities across several specialities, including malware research, telecom security, and vulnerability management.

Key positions included Malware Researchers, who focus on analysing phishing attacks and malware, and Cyber Crime Researchers, responsible for securing telecom infrastructures like 4G, 5G, and IoT systems.

I4C also opened roles for Technical Assistants, Cyber Threat Analysts, and Executive Assistants, all offering competitive pay. The initiative aims to strengthen India’s digital defences and attract highly skilled professionals to safeguard critical infrastructure and financial technologies.

Salary and job role insights

While the I4C initiative is helping bridge the gap, cybersecurity salaries in the private sector remain highly competitive, drawing both experienced and aspiring professionals.

Indeed’s data revealed average annual salaries for key roles in India’s cybersecurity sector:

IT Security Specialist: ₹6,90,946

Cyber Security Architect: ₹17,67,020

Cyber Security Specialist: ₹3,27,995

Cyber Security Systems Engineer: ₹8,33,487

These figures highlight the growing financial incentives for cybersecurity professionals, with roles such as Cyber Security Architect commanding particularly high salaries due to the expertise required.

CloudSEK, a cybersecurity startup, continues to recruit talent aggressively, offering competitive salaries, upskilling opportunities, and flexible work arrangements.

Devika Chauhan, Vice President of Human Resources at CloudSEK, explains, “Cybersecurity professionals are generally paid more than other IT specialists due to their unique skill sets and critical role in safeguarding digital assets. To retain talent, we offer continuous learning opportunities, certifications, and flexibility, which reflect the dynamic nature of the cybersecurity field.”

Skills in demand: Communication and technical expertise

As companies continue to enhance their digital defences, certain skills are in particularly high demand. According to Indeed, the top five skills for cybersecurity roles in India include:

S.No Top Skills % of Jobs
1 Communication skills 43%
2 Information security 32%
3 Firewall 22%
4 Azure 22%
5 AWS 21%

Addressing the talent shortage

Despite the boom in cybersecurity jobs, the industry faces a significant talent shortage. Advanced roles like Cyber Security Architect and IT Security Specialist are particularly hard to fill, both globally and in India.

The World Economic Forum reported nearly 40,000 unfilled cybersecurity positions in India as of May 2023, underscoring the skills gap.

Professor Triveni Singh, former IPS and chief mentor at Future Crime Research Foundation (FCRF), warns, “In today’s digital world, it’s no longer enough for companies and government organisations to rely solely on their IT teams to handle cybersecurity. A dedicated cybersecurity team is essential. The problem is, there aren’t enough institutes offering specialised cybersecurity courses, and those that do often aren’t keeping pace with the industry’s evolving needs.”

The government’s recent Data Protection Bill, which mandates organisations to appoint Grievance Officers and Data Protection Officers, has further heightened the demand for qualified cybersecurity personnel. As cyberattacks become more frequent and damaging, with 66% of companies losing over $1 million due to such incidents, the need for skilled professionals has never been more urgent.
