Akshay Kumar reveals why he took Canadian citizenship before giving it up recently: ‘My films were not working at the time…’ |
Akshay Kumar has always considered himself Indian in heart, mind, and soul, and now his passport reflects that. Last year, the actor gave up his Canadian citizenship and got an Indian passport.
He shared this during his talk at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit 2024. During the event, a fan’s message was read aloud, suggesting that Akshay must have had a special insight into the growing tension between India and Canada. Akshay laughed off the comment, attributing his decision to leave Canada quietly to the blessings of his parents, rather than any special foresight.
Akshay explained that he applied for Canadian citizenship during the Covid pandemic when his films weren’t performing well. He needed work and found opportunities in Canada through a friend in the cargo business. However, after two of his films became hits, followed by several more successful projects, he simply forgot about his Canadian citizenship.
The actor also shared that his identity as an Indian has always been deep-rooted in his mind, heart, and soul, and he never really cared about his Canadian citizenship. He recalled mentioning a few years ago that he would give it up, and last year, on either the 14th or 15th of August, he finally received his Indian passport.
Earlier, Akshay Kumar shared a photo of his official government documents confirming his Indian citizenship. He captioned the post, ‘Dil aur citizenship, dono Hindustani (Heart and citizenship, both Indian). Happy Independence Day! Jai Hind’.
