Amitabh Bachchan has recently opened up about a deeply personal chapter from his family history. The Big B opened up about how his father’s first wife’s passing away had impacted his father, Harivansh Rai Bachchan.
Sharing it with Aamir Khan on Kaun Banega Crorepati, Amitabh spoke about the lesser-known story of his father’s first marriage. The renowned poet was first married to Shyama Bachchan, but according to reports she died a few years into the marriage.He also spoke about how his father eventually met his mother Teji.
Mr Bachchan revealed that his father slipped into a depressive state of mind, following the death of Shyama. He also said that his father wrote many poems that were sad and dark in nature, after that. A few years after the demise of his first wife, Harivansh Rai started participating in poetry gatherings.
“He had a friend in Bareilly and got an invite to meet him. My father went to meet him. During the dinner, he was requested to narrate a poem. But before my father could begin, his friend asked his wife to call in Teji. That’s where he met her,” Big B reminisced.

Big B further recalled how his mother came and sat quietly to listen to his father’s poem. His father read out the ‘Kya Karu Samvedna Lekar Tumhari’ poem, and after the narration, Teji was in tears. “That was the day he decided she was his life partner,” he added.
Harivansh Rai Bachchan tied the knot with Teji Bachchan in 1941 and Amitabh Bachchan was born on October 11, 1942.
