India’s EV sector ramps up: Maruti, Royal Enfield, and Mahindra set to unveil new electric models in November
Maruti Suzuki is set to globally unveil its first electric vehicle, the eVX, on Monday in Milan. This launch marks a milestone for Suzuki Motor Company, being its first production-ready electric car. Built-in partnership with Toyota, the eVX benefits from Toyota’s advanced technological expertise and will be manufactured at Suzuki’s Gujarat plant. Initially, the vehicle will be exported to Europe, followed by a launch in Japan, before reaching Indian shores.
Maruti Suzuki plans to introduce the eVX to the Indian market at the Auto Expo in January 2025, with commercial availability expected by May or June of the next fiscal year. Although initially targeted for an earlier release, Maruti has pushed the Indian launch by two months to complete additional validation and testing. The eVX is projected to come with a price tag around ₹25 lakh, featuring an impressive range of over 500 kilometers, powered by a robust 60 kWh battery. Maruti’s EV will face off against competitors like the electric Hyundai Creta, set for release early next year.
In the two-wheeler segment, Royal Enfield is generating buzz as it prepares to unveil its first electric motorcycle, potentially named “The Flying Flea.” Teasers on social media show motorcycles being parachuted down, a nod to the “Flying Flea” from World War II, which was also deployed via parachutes for military use.
The Mahindra Group will introduce two new luxury electric SUVs on November 26. Revealing the names, XCV-9E and BE-6E, Mahindra has confirmed that both models will offer long ranges, advanced semiconductor technology, and an array of connected car features. Positioned as a luxury offering, the SUVs will be priced under ₹35 lakh, making them competitive within India’s premium EV market.
The flurry of high-profile launches highlights a pivotal month for India’s EV sector, signaling the industry’s commitment to sustainability and innovation. With Maruti Suzuki’s eVX, Royal Enfield’s Flying Flea, and Mahindra’s luxurious SUVs, Indian consumers will soon have access to a diverse array of EV options across both the four-wheeler and two-wheeler segments.
