Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma’s flying kiss celebration

NEW DELHI: Former India head coach Ravi Shastri shared a delightful anecdote on Monday about Virat Kohli and his wife Anushka Sharma, after Kohli’s flying-kiss celebration during the first Test against Australia in Perth captured hearts. Kohli scored a stellar unbeaten 100 in India’s second innings, marking his 30th Test century, and celebrated by blowing kisses to Anushka from the pitch.
Shastri revealed a similar moment from 2014 when Kohli, then dating Anushka, had sought special permission for her to join him on the Boxing Day Test tour in Melbourne.

“I remember when I was the coach …. He [Kohli] wasn’t married then, he was dating Anushka. He came, and he said ‘only wives are allowed, can I get my girlfriend here?’. I said sure. He said ‘the board is not allowing it’. So, I made the call. And, she came up and joined him. The very first game, Boxing Day Test he got a 160 [169 at MCG in 2014]. And the same scene ‘the flying kiss’ went out just like yesterday. She is a big support for him,” Shastri reminisced.
The anecdote sparked laughter in the commentary box, with Brett Lee quipping, “When Ravi speaks, you listen.”

After his innings, Kohli acknowledged Anushka’s role, saying, “She’s been right by my side through thick and thin. She knows everything that goes on behind the scenes.”
The emotional celebration and Shastri’s recollection highlight the personal bond that has consistently fueled Kohli’s career.
