Regulatory framework must for AI, says Union Jyotiraditya Scindia

NEW DELHI: Communications minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Monday emphasised the need for having a regulatory framework around AI, saying that a policy framework cannot be an “afterthought” and that concerns around privacy and algo bias must be addressed.
Scindia said AI has the potential to emerge as a “force for good”, but needs guardrails to ensure that it is applied fairly and is “guided by ethical considerations and robust regulatory framework.”
“…We must address the concerns of privacy, of bias, and of transparency, to ensure that these technologies serve as a force for good,” Scindia said at the International Telecommunication Union – World Telecommunication Standardisation Assembly (ITU-WTSA) event here.
The minister also said collaboration and a “united approach” is necessary to ensure that benefits of technological leapfrogging are realised and become the foundation of the next digital wave. “The wonders of 5G, the brilliance of AI and interconnected models of IoT are transforming industries, societies and manufacturing processes, and economies on a global scale. Yet their full potential can only be realised through a united approach.” He said international standards play a crucial role in promoting innovation.
