Samsung workers in Tamil Nadu who have been striking for over a month are likely to return to work on October 16. The workers shall be back at the Sriperumbudur plant after the conclusion of the meeting of Centre of Indian Trade Unions’ (CITU), the union representing the striking workers, to make a final decision on withdrawing the protest and accepting the firm’s conditions.

As per a statement issued by the Tamil Nadu government on October 15, the 37-day strike was to be called off after various departments conducted meetings with concerned parties at various stages and the Samusung management announced several welfare measures in the interest of the workers.

“CITU will make an official announcement on Wednesday,” union leader E Muthukumar had told Reuters.

The strike, which began on September 9, saw workers’ demanding better wages, reduced working hours, and formal recognition of their union.

Senior ministers, including those from Labour Welfare, Micro Small and Medium Enterprises, and Industries, conducted several rounds of meetings with Samsung’s management and labour union representatives.
