However, this convenience often comes with hidden traps that can lead to frustration and financial strain. Have you ever found yourself bombarded with notifications urging you to buy something you weren’t even looking for, or missed out on a “limited-time offer”? These manipulative practices fall under what the Consumer Affairs Ministry refers to as dark patterns.

Dark patterns are user interface designs that are deceptive or misleading, and they can be found on nearly every e-commerce platform. From e-pharmacies and online marketplaces to food delivery apps and quick commerce platforms, these practices are pervasive.

Many social media users have taken to platforms like Twitter and Instagram to voice their frustrations over such tactics, sharing experiences that highlight the manipulative nature of online shopping.

For example, a woman claimed she received a notification from a quick commerce platform saying that an emergency contraceptive pill was missing from her cart and that she must add it. Another user on another quick commerce platform claimed that an item was automatically added to the cart at checkout without his consent.

In response to the growing concern over dark patterns, the Consumer Affairs Ministry has issued guidelines that outline 13 specific practices that companies must avoid. These guidelines target issues ranging from manipulating user privacy to misleading pricing practices. Violations of these guidelines could result in legal action under the Consumer Protection Act of 2019.

To help consumers navigate this tricky landscape, here are the top five dark patterns to watch out for:

  1. Privacy Deception: This occurs when apps trick users into sharing more personal data than necessary. For example, a loan app might request access to your camera or photo gallery, despite these functions having nothing to do with its primary purpose.
  2. Basket Sneaking: In this scenario, unwanted items are added to your shopping cart without your consent, often just before checkout. This tactic can unexpectedly increase your total bill, leading to unwelcome surprises.
  3. False Urgency: Many e-commerce platforms employ tactics like limited-time offers that pressure users to make impulsive purchases without sufficient time for reflection. This urgency can cloud judgment and lead to regrettable buying decisions.
  4. Bait and Switch: This pattern occurs when users click on a link expecting to access one type of content, only to be redirected to an advertisement or irrelevant page. Such deceptive practices can create confusion and dissatisfaction among users.
  5. Subscription Trap: Users may unknowingly sign up for recurring services that can be challenging to cancel. Many find themselves trapped in a cycle of automatic payments, leading to frustration and financial loss.

As consumers, it’s crucial to remain vigilant while using online shopping platforms. Always read the terms and conditions to understand what you’re signing up for, double-check your shopping carts before finalising purchases, and protect your private information.
