Snapdeal’s Kunal Bahl on Ratan Tata — ‘A bridge between traditional biz and startups’
“It was a very sad day,” Bahl told CNBC-TV18, reminiscing about how Tata “single-handedly bridged the gap between traditional Indian businesses and startups.” He recalled Tata’s unique perspective on startups, stating, “He looked at startups as innovators.”
Reflecting on their first meeting, Bahl said, “He was running about five-seven minutes late, and when he came, my heart just stopped because I had only seen him on TV and in newspapers and magazines, never in person. And the first thing he did was just profusely apologise for being late. And I was just wondering, ‘Why is he apologising?’ He was like five minutes late. It doesn’t matter.” But this humility defined Tata, and the same humility left a lasting impression on Bahl.
Bahl recounted how Tata provided invaluable advice during challenging times, underscoring the importance of building long-term relationships. “He called for sticking to relationships to build something enduring,” Bahl said. “He had been investing in the startup ecosystem for a few years and understood that the world of investments was largely transactional.”
Bahl also reflected on the scepticism surrounding startups a decade ago, noting, “Most Indian businesses almost coughed at the startup ecosystem.” However, Tata recognised their potential, stating, “What can I do? I can lend my name. I can lend some money.”
During the same meeting, Bahl shared another poignant moment, when he asked Tata if he would be willing to visit Bahl’s team and give them a talk. Tata agreed, but the talk never materialised.
“Two or three years ago, I met him at a wedding, and he smiled, saying, ‘I still owe you that trip.’ That is the greatness of Mr Tata. He just connects with people at a different level,” Bahl said.
