Stock market today: BSE Sensex ends just above 80,000; Nifty50 near 24,200
Stock market today: Stock market indices BSE Sensex and Nifty50 ended their two-day upward trend, closing lower on Tuesday, reflecting weak global markets and worries about tariff threats from US President-elect Donald Trump.
The 30-share Sensex fell 105.79 points or 0.13 per cent, settling at 80,004.06. During trading, it dropped 311.18 points or 0.38 per cent to 79,798.67. The NSE Nifty decreased by 27.40 points or 0.11 per cent to 24,194.50.
Among the Sensex constituents, major decliners included UltraTech Cement, Adani Ports, Sun Pharma, NTPC, Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, Larsen & Toubro and Power Grid.
The primary gainers were Asian Paints, Infosys, JSW Steel, Tata Consultancy Services and Reliance Industries.
International markets declined after US President-elect Donald Trump announced plans to implement new tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China upon taking office on January 20.
Asian markets showed mixed results, with Seoul, Tokyo and Shanghai declining whilst Hong Kong advanced.
European markets traded lower, while US markets finished positively on Monday.
Adani group stocks universally declined, with Adani Green Energy recording a 7.05 per cent fall.
The global oil benchmark Brent crude increased 0.71 per cent to USD 73.58 per barrel.
The previous day saw significant gains in benchmark indices, driven by BJP’s remarkable performance in Maharashtra, securing a historic number of seats and leading the Mahayuti alliance to a decisive victory.
On Monday, the BSE benchmark rose by 992.74 points or 1.25 per cent to close at 80,109.85. The Nifty increased by 314.65 points or 1.32 per cent to 24,221.90.
Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) reversed their recent selling trend on Monday, purchasing equities worth Rs 9,947.55 crore, as per exchange data.
