Tamil Nadu declares half-day holiday for schools and colleges on October 30 for Diwali
In a statement, the government has also clarified that in addition to half day on October 30, October 31 and November 1 are holidays as well.
The clarification came amid confusion due to reports that implied that no mention of holidays on October 31 and November 1 could mean that the two days were working.
On October 30, schools and colleges will function only till noon.
Diwali in Tamil culture, is often observed on Naraka Chaturdashi, which is usually one day before the North Indian Diwali. In 2024, Tamil Deepavali will be celebrated on October 31, 2024.
In Tamil Nadu, the festival is called Deepavali. The day is celebrated to mark the day when Lord Krishna killed demon Narakasuran on the day of Chatrudasi.
On the day of this festival, people wake up early in the morning, take the traditional oil bath and wash their body from hair to toe.
Meanwhile, in North India, Diwali marks the return of Lord Rama from exile after defeating Ravana, an evil demon king who had abducted his wife Sita.
Also, on this day, Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped with great devotion. It is often stated that she makes her earthly appearance on this day and bestows health and success upon her devotees.
