Throwback: When Sushmita Sen reflected on learning table manners after Miss Universe win | Hindi Movie News

Sushmita Sen, who made history in 1994, as the first Indian woman to win the coveted Miss Universe title, had shared a memorable experience from her journey. In an old interview with Curly Tales, she recalled how a dinner in Mexico soon after her victory highlighted the need for her to learn proper table manners.

The actress explained that at just 18 years old, she was invited as the chief guest to an official dinner in Mexico.

Despite the excitement, Sushmita admitted she felt out of place. She barely spoke English at the time and found herself seated at the head of a large table surrounded by important guests, including twenty men.
Sushmita shared that she was very hungry but unsure how to start eating. Her travel manager, Barbara, sitting beside her, informed her that as the guest of honour, it was her responsibility to begin the meal. Feeling unsure, Sushmita hesitated until a gentleman seated next to her, the tourism minister of Mexico, kindly guided her through the seven-course dinner.
This experience deeply impacted Sushmita, who decided to improve her etiquette skills. She approached the Miss Universe organisation with her concerns, and they arranged for her to meet an etiquette teacher in San Francisco. The teacher introduced her to various social graces, including dining etiquette, which Sushmita found immensely helpful.
One of the lessons that stood out to her was the advice to eat a meal before attending official dinners. The teacher explained that this practice helps one avoid overeating and maintain grace at the table. Sushmita remembered being told, “Eat well at home so you don’t feel compelled to eat too much at the event. This way, you can politely decline extra servings and appear disciplined.”

Looking back, Sushmita expressed gratitude for these lessons, which not only boosted her confidence but also helped her carry herself elegantly in any situation.
