Vasan Bala recently expressed his concern about the box office failure of his film ‘Jigra‘, featuring Alia Bhatt. The film was backed by Karan Johar’s production house, and now Vasan discussed the standing of filmmaker Karan Johar in the industry. Bala noted that Karan’s current reputation is not a product of inheritance but rather the result of his own efforts. He took the opportunity to commend Alia Bhatt as well, recognizing both her and Karan’s dedication and hard work, which have contributed to their respected statuses in the film world.
In a chat with VOA India, Bala praised Karan Johar for his significant contributions to Indian cinema, emphasizing that his successful position is a result of his hard work, not inherited privilege. He noted that producing a film requires substantial resources and highlighted the reputations that both the star and producer have built over time. Bala remarked that Johar did not receive his status as a legacy: “Karan ko viraasat mein nahi mili hai (Karan did not get this in his inheritance); he has made the biggest blockbusters and earned this position for himself,” he added. The filmmaker further mentioned how Alia Bhatt has similarly established her reputation over the past decade.

Bala shared his feelings of guilt for not meeting expectations, particularly regarding box office performance with ‘Jigra’. He emphasized the importance of box office returns, stating that filmmaking is a costly endeavor and that both Karan Johar and Alia Bhatt have developed their reputations through dedicated hard work and success.
Although ‘Jigra’ has not met its financial goals, with global earnings below Rs 50 crore against a production cost of Rs 90 crore, Bala highlighted the necessity of achieving at least minimal returns. He also shared insights about working with Alia Bhatt on set, describing her as instinctive and wise, noting that their decisions on scenes were made swiftly and intuitively, rather than through calculation.
‘Jigra’ also featured actors Vedang Raina, Manoj Pahwa, and Rahul Ravindran, and it hit theaters on October 11.
