India is bestowed with filmmakers who have it in their gut to open a dialogue with their work. One such filmmaker is Vidhu Vinod Chopra who uses cinema not only to entertain but to inspire. An example of the same is his recent movie ‘12th Fail.’ The movie was lauded by the audience and critics alike. On the third day of the Indian International Film Festival (IFFI) in Goa on Friday, Viddhu Vinod Chopra revealed he was told ‘12 Fail’ would have been a better nomination to represent India at the Academy Awards’ Best International Film category, instead of the submission that was made.
At the IFFI, the filmmaker also discussed his 1989 film ‘Parindaa.’ He was asked why thrillers don’t get the National Award, and Vidhu candidly replied, “You are giving too much importance to the National Awards.”
“Can I tell you one thing in return that so many people have told me, including people in Hollywood, that 12th Fail should have represented India at Oscars, not whatever went,” said Vidhu Vinod Chopra as he highlighted how people told him that Vikrant Messy starrer ‘12th Fail’ was better suited to represent India at the 97th Academy Awards.
He made it clear that he doesn’t care much about awards but rather seeks comfort in making a good film. “What I care for — did I make a good film, did I not make a good film? So please don’t give so much importance (to awards). Awards are for people outside of (the industry) who are acknowledging you for God knows what reasons. So please don’t bother,” mentioned Vidhu Vinod Chopra.
The filmmaker also shared his plans to restore some of his iconic movies in 8K resolution. His list includes ‘3 Idiots’ and ‘Parinda.’
