World Students’ Day: History
World Students’ Day is observed each year on October 15 to mark the birth anniversary of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, who served as the 11th President of India from 2002 to 2007. He’s fondly known as the ‘Missile Man of India’ for his role in advancing India’s space and missile programmes.
Dr Kalam worked extensively with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), making immense contributions to India’s scientific and technological advancements.
Despite his professional achievements, he is remembered for his deep connection with young people. Dr Kalam believed that students were the key to India’s development and future success, and he spent much of his life mentoring and inspiring them.
After his term as president, Dr Kalam continued his passion for teaching as a visiting professor at various prestigious institutions, including the Indian Institute of Management Shillong and Anna University in Tamil Nadu. He also held the position of chancellor at the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology in Thiruvananthapuram. He died on July 27, 2015, while delivering a lecture to students at IIM Shillong.
Significance
World Students’ Day is more than just a celebration of Dr Kalam’s legacy — it serves as a platform to recognise the immense potential of students. The day acknowledges their achievements, encourages them to strive for success and highlights the transformative power of education in their lives.
Dr Kalam’s life and teachings remain central to the significance of this day. His vision for students was not limited to academic success — he encouraged them to be resilient, think creatively and work hard to achieve their dreams.
