Cyclone Dana: Schools closed in 14 Odisha districts from October 23-25

Schools in 14 Odisha districts will remain closed from Wednesday to Friday, due to an impending cyclonic storm. Cyclone Dana is expected to form on October 23 and make landfall on the Odisha-West Bengal coast the following day, necessitating the closure of schools and anganwadis in 14 districts.

The Office of Special Relief Commissioner has issued an order closing schools in Ganjam, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Angul, Khurda, Nayagargh, and Cuttack.

“Keeping in view, the schools in the above districts from October 23rd to 25th shall remain closed as a precautionary measure. It is, therefore, requested to please take necessary action in this regard under intimation to this department,” the order stated.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy rainfall is predicted in Odisha in the upcoming week as Cyclone Dana is expected to make landfall on October 24.

“As you are aware, IMD, Bhubaneswar, has predicted that a well-marked low-pressure area has been developed over the east-central Bay of Bengal at 1130 hours IST of today, the 21st October 2024 which is very likely to move west- northwestwards and intensify into a depression by October 22 morning and into a cyclonic storm by October 23, over the east-central Bay of Bengal,” the order said.

“Thereafter, it is very likely to move northwestwards and reach the northwest Bay of Bengal off Odisha-West Bengal coasts by October 24 morning. It is further very likely to cross north Odisha and West Bengal coasts between Puri and Sagar Island during the night of 24th and early morning of October 25th, as a severe Cyclonic Storm with a wind speed of 100-110 kmph gusting 120 kmph,” it added.

Chief Minister Charan Majhi has said that the state government is fully prepared to tackle any situation following the cyclone. He said that the cyclone shelters would be equipped with all necessities and essential commodities.

Earlier, while speaking to ANI, IMD scientist Soma Sen Roy stated that warnings have been issued for coastal Odisha and Andaman and Nicobar Islands due to the impact of the landfall.
